Learning Horizons has teamed up with EduKid to help children in Uganda and is now providing schools with free copies of the Newell Literacy Programme and Sounds to Words.

About the charity: EDUKID

Edukid helps disadvantaged children and families access education in Cambodia and Uganda. For many in these countries education is seen as a way of breaking the poverty that they live in. Edukid aims to provide everything a child needs to go to school and gives them a sense of hope of a brighter future. Charity Registration No 1099058

Last November Chris Turner and Mike Beatty  travelled to Uganda to visit a project run by Edukid. The project helps children affected by the legacy of war. In particular ex child soldiers, abductees, child led families, orphans and those with HIV/AIDS. The project will help these children have an education and thereby give them the tools to find work and break out of the poverty they live in. This way they can support themselves and have hope of a brighter future.

Chris and Mike from Edukid raised money to film a short documentary that can be used to give these children a voice. The aim is to make people aware of their situation and triple the number of children Edukid can help.

Learning Horizons will  be working closely with Edukid to provide literacy support for the children attending these schools. In March, 2009 we will donate sets of the Newell Literacy Programme and the Sounds to Words Program to twenty schools in these regions and provide them with support and training to implement them. Our plans are to initally support the teachers  through online training and dvds and eventually, move things forward and travel with a group of volunteer teachers from Ireland who will give advanced training and workshops to teachers locally. If you would like to volunteer and are interested in this program, please contact us now.

Meet the kids

Message from Sreyda - Cambodia

Hello my name is Sreyda. I am 19 years old. I have been a children's worker for Care for Cambodia (Edukid's partner in Cambodia) since I was 16. I really wanted to help the children that lived near me. They were not going to school and no one was doing anything for them. I started out by having the little ones round every morning and teaching them some basic reading and writing. Now we work with edukid it makes such a difference. I would like to say thank you to all of you that ever helped the children in my project. The children and their parents would like to say thank you too. All the children are very happy to get your support because it helps them to go to school and encourages them to study hard.

Here are some ‘thank you's' from some of the children I work with here in my village and in some of the other villages.

God bless you,

Sreyda

Hi my name is Vanak. I'm 13 years old. I live in a village called SineSok which is a fairly new village. We used to live in a squatter village in Phnom Penh, near the river when I was little but one day it burnt down and the government moved everyone out here.

I live here with my three sisters and my brother and my mum and dad. My dad does anything he can for work, farming or working on a building site, my mum looks after us.

I love drawing and when I grow up I'd like to be an artist. Edukid has helped me continue to go to school which is great as I have lots of good things to study. I have even learnt to write my name in English! Thank you.

Hello there. I'm Seem. I'm 17 and from Kpopp Kraum. I live with my Mum, my Nan and my two sisters. My dad died and my mum has to work in the fields to grow things for us to eat. I really like reading and I am very happy because I get a special pack from you who support me, which means I can go to school. Thank you very much. If I can finish school I'd love to be a doctor and then I could help my mum and my old grandma.

I'm Chantha. I'm 12 and live in Sinesok with my five brothers and one sister, my mum, my Dad and my Gran. My dad does anything he can for work and my mum has a stall outside our house where we sell things to eat. I help her when ever I can. When I'm older I'd love to visit the mountains in the north of Cambodia, as I've never been further than Phnom Penh. When I finish school I'd love to become a teacher. The Edukid pack has been an answer to my needs, with 7 of us to look after it meant that my mum didn't have to worry about buying uniforms which is a lot of money.

My name is Guntee. I'm 16 and from Kpopp Kraum. This is me at home sewing beads onto a traditional dress. We wear dresses like this at weddings and festivals like new year. I live in this house with my Mum, Dad, two sisters and two brothers. You can see my bed rolled up behind me on the floor. We all sleep on the floor in this one room. The house is on stilts to keep it out of the mud during the rainy season and the slats in the floor let the air in and keep us cool at night. We cook outside; my favourite food is fried fish. My Mum and Dad work in the fields. This means we don't have any spare money. The edukid pack is full of lots of things that I need for going to school. It has meant that I can keep going to school even when we don't have any money. Knowing that someone has helped me like this really makes me try and study more too.

Hi, I'm Hor. I'm 13 and from Krang Svay. I love playing football with my friends and would love to visit the seaside one day. I live with my Mum and two sisters. My Dad died and since then my Mum has tried to sell things to earn money for us all, but its really hard. Edukid has helped me to have new clothes and a lot of things so that I can go to school with happiness. When I leave school I want to be a teacher.

Hello my name is Tooch. I'm 14 years old and come from Krang Svay.  I've got one brother and two sisters. Both my parents have died and my Nan lives with us, but she is really old. Last year I thought ‘oh, maybe I can not go to school because I have nothing for school, no books or uniform or anything...but one month later I got an edukid pack and I'm so happy!!'
